Netball: Brown in with a shot at rejoining Ferns

Former Silver Fern Jodi Brown is back in contention for a spot in the national side.

The 31-year-old made 28 appearances for the Silver Ferns from 2002-07 but a knee injury and time away from the game to start a family saw her international career stall.

But Brown and 24 others will get a chance to press their claims during the national trials being held in Auckland from August 13-16.

Steel team-mate Shannon Francois and Otago midcourter Gina Crampton have also been asked to trial.

The Silver Ferns squad, which will contest the Constellation Cup, will be announced on August 20 and Brown has every chance of making the side.

Incumbent shooters Irene van Dyk, Cathrine Latu and Maria Tutaia are unlikely to lose their spots.

But Paula Griffin's grip on the fourth shooting spot is tenuous with both Brown and Magic goal attack Julianna Naoupu nipping at her heels.

Defenders Leana de Bruin and Casey Williams are certain to be named while Anna Harrison and Katrina Grant should see off challenges from Kayla Cullen, Jessica Moulds and Te Huinga Reo Selby-Rickit.

Harrison was outstanding for the Northern Mystics this season and hit the headlines with the "Harrison Hoist"- a revolutionary defensive technique which saw one of her team-mates lift her much in the same way as a prop would lift a lock during a rugby lineout.

The retirement of Temepara George and the unavailability of Joline Henry and Liana Leota have created opportunities in the midcourt.

Laura Langman will be the first name written down but who joins her is unclear. It is possible Harrison could shift from the defensive circle to wing defence to fill one of the vacancies.

Elias Shadrock made good progress at wing defence for the Magic and Canterbury's Anna Thompson is an option at wing attack while Pulse centre Camilla Lees will be in the mix, probably as the starting centre with Langman at wing attack.

Francois is a long shot but might force her way on to the bench with a strong showing during the trials.

Crampton is very much a development player.
