Agbeze (33), who has more than 50 caps for England, turned out for the Southern Magpies side in a club match against College at the Edgar Centre.
Agbeze, who has played for ANZ Championship franchises in both New Zealand and Australia, is travelling through New Zealand and staying with Southern coach Georgie Salter.
The two women met when Agbeze travelled to New Zealand many years ago in an English national under-17 squad.
They struck up a friendship that continues to this day.
Southern Magpies had a game scheduled against College A last night and with injuries, sickness and player unavailabilities, called in Agbeze, who has just finished captaining England at a tournament in Manchester.
The club checked Agbeze could play and found that she was eligible.
She did not start the game but came on in the second half and played at the back, taking the goal keep position for the Southern side.
Unfortunately, although she had plenty of presence on the court, she could not quite help the Southern Magpies to victory.
The College side won 44-38.
It is expected Agbeze's appearance for the Southern side will be a one-off.
