Heading across the Ditch to negotiate ditches, drop-offs and other balance-requiring challenges has resulted in promising moto trials specialist Blake Fox, of Dunedin, notching some promising results.

The Brighton 17-year-old went to Australia two weeks ago and has returned as the Victorian moto trials A grade champion, his best performance to date.

He also competed in the third and fourth rounds of the world moto trials championships, near Melbourne, in the youth class for 16 to 18-year-olds.

On the first day of competition, in front of a crowd of about 8000, Fox finished seventh. Over the second day he improved to finish fourth and the highest-placed Australasian competitor, behind three European riders.

The result on the world stage was what he had been aiming for and he was pleased his mental preparation, coupled with intensive training, allowed him to conquer some "pretty daunting"obstacles.

"It was an awesome experience and atmosphere."

His mother, Vicky, was there as his manager, and father Gavin was Blake's "minder" on the tricky courses as he descended steep rock faces on his purpose-built motorbike. Seeing his father dangling on a rope, due to the height of the drop-offs, to catch him if he fell, meant "mind over matter" was vital in his quest not to place a foot on the ground and surrender points, Fox said.

He picked up his new 2012 Gas Gas 125cc trials bike in Australia, meaning to leave it there for future events, but needed it earlier than expected. His Australian sponsor, Trials Experience, invited him to stay on to contest the Victorian championships last weekendand he won the open category A grade class, the second-top tier.

The Taieri College year 13 pupil hopes to sign a sponsorship deal that will allow him to compete internationally next year.

He plans to return to Australia in August, for the national championships in Perth.
