A flurry of matches this weekend signal preparation for the winter season starting next month.
There is also the last fixture for Southern United's youth team after a demanding 14-game national competition.
Dunedin Technical plays Caversham today at noon at Kettle Park, with coaches Aaron Burgess (Technical) and Tim Horner (Caversham) keen to blow away the cobwebs from summer's hiatus.
Mosgiel travels to Forrester Park for another warm-up match against Selwyn, as new coach Andrew Brook casts an appraising eye over the Plainsmen.
Brook has been in overdrive recently, training Mosgiel for winter football, yet still finding time to work with Mike McGarry at Tahuna Park as the Southern United youth team wraps up its season.
United's youth side faces a tough finish to a demanding season which has given the youngsters invaluable experience travelling all over the country, and playing against Wellington, Nelson, Wairarapa, Manawatu, and Christchurch sides.
Such experience might elevate some youngsters into consideration for next season's senior side in the ASB Premiership.
The youth side's final match, against Wellington at Tahuna Park tomorrow, gives Southern a chance to avenge a 5-0 loss in the first round, and Brook and McGarry are confident of an improvement.
Wellington also had a back-breaking result last week when Canterbury ran rampant with a 5-2 win over coach James Webb's side, so the signs suggest a high-scoring contest.
Two over-age players are allowed in the competition, and while Southern has rarely used this advantage, it seems likely that Jacob Schneider and Peter Rae might get a run tomorrow.
Last week, Southern beat Waiarapa 3-2 on the road, with goals by James McGarry (two) and Nick Hindson, to overtake the Masterton club on the table.
''Two consecutive wins is our target,'' Brook said.
''It would be nice to finish on a high note.''
