Football: Technical runs riot in second half

The fickle nature of football was never better illustrated than when Dunedin Technical battled a good young Mosgiel side on Saturday and, after a scoreless first half, coach Aaron Burgess' Technical ran riot to win 5-0.

Burgess admitted the first half had been equal, but praised his side's strong attitude, and eventual deadly finishing.

''The first goal was obviously going to be very important and when Alistair [Rickerby] scored in the 55th minute we never looked back,'' Burgess said.

Andrew Douglas headed a right-wing corner goalwards, Mosgiel keeper Tom Stevens got a hand to it, but Technical's predator, Rickerby, was first to the loose ball, and stabbed in a close-range goal.

Earlier, some quality Mosgiel moves resulted in Morgan Day hitting Technical's woodwork, and several other shots were on target, but Technical keeper Tom Batty showed safe hands.

Mosgiel coach Andrew Brook was in despair.

''We played well, in the first half, set up chances, got shots on target, and hit their woodwork, yet we come away with a 5-nil defeat,'' Brooks said.

Mosgiel looked lively earlier on, Day stabilising play in midfield and pushing forward in attack well supported by Rahan Ali, Matt Kelly and Riley Anderton. But there were few clinical finishers in front of goal.

In contrast, Technical took its chances and, in the 68th minute, a glorious header by Matt Joy slotted in the top-right corner of goal, with keeper Stevens barely a fingernail away.

Mosgiel conceded a soft goal two minutes later, giving Rickerby time to pick his spot. Technical was well served by the wide runs of Tim McLennan, the effort of Taylor McCormack and Rickerby, and the central combination of Douglas and Joy.

Oozing confidence, Technical took over and, apart from a late flourish by Mosgiel, the maroons dominated. In the 83rd minute, McCormack took his season tally to nine. Four minutes later, coach Burgess, a former Golden Boot striker, showed he still has the knack with a well-taken shot on the turn.

At Ellis Park, Roslyn-Wakari beat Green Island 4-1. Mike Sannum stylishly opened the scoring, then Fraser Cameron hit a brace. Goal of the match, however, was by Curtis Day who clinically volleyed a superb goal. Green Island's reply came via Tennessee Kinghorn.

In Queenstown, top team Caversham kept up its good form. Sam Collier scored twice and Tore Waecher got the other in a 3-0 away win.

Attention shifts to the Chatham Cup today. Old Boys play University, Northern Hearts takes on Mosgiel, West End plays Pleasant Point and, in the feature match, Dunedin Technical meets Roslyn Wakari at the Caledonian, kicking off at 2pm.
