Football: Franchini masterful for Mosgiel

Mosgiel served notice of its ambitions with a well deserved 2-1 win over Dunedin Technical at Memorial Park on Saturday.

A key factor in Mosgiel's win was the commanding performance by Eder Franchini Pasten, who directed play from centre midfield with a masterly exhibition of ball distribution and support.

The Chilean defies the current convention of playing the ball the way you are facing, and slides acute angled passes through almost non existent gaps, as well as lofting perfectly weighted chips behind opposing defences.

Franchini inspired improved performances from his team mates. Morgan Day had one of his best games, Rahan Ali produced tackling and work rate to match his silky skills and Matt Kelly and Cody Brook were outstanding.

Brook was unlucky not to score when he hit the Technical crossbar, but a deceptive run along the byline by Franchini shortly afterwards fractured the maroon defence and Kelly had a simple tap in to score in the 11th minute.

Meanwhile, Technical eventually settled down, found space on the wings and tried to harness the undoubted pace that exists in coach Aaron Burgess's side.

Central striker Taylor McCormack snapped at half chances, and Alistair Rickerby performed a similar role. In the 27th minute, Technical pressure forced a weak clearance and, cutting in from the left, Tim McLennan hammered in a superb shot to equalise.

But Mosgiel showed it had pace to spare, too, as Isaac Snell ran on to an astute Ali pass, carved up the centre of the field past defenders, went around keeper Liam Whittaker and slotted the ball home to produce a 2 1 lead at halftime for the plainsmen.

Technical lifted its game in the second half. McCormack had a goal chalked off due to being marginally offside, then the striker missed an easy chance.

Technical was an improved side from the first spell, and looked set to dominate the younger Mosgiel team until referee Jack Cowie deemed a tackle by Justin Flaws worth a red card, and Technical was down to 10 men.

Coach Burgess brought himself on, and despite being a man short, Technical mounted sustained pressure that earned a stream of corners and free kicks, while Mosgiel always looked capable of killing the game with pacey counter attacks.

Both goalmouths saw frantic clearances, brave saves by keepers and a few nervous mis hits in front of goal, but the plainsmen survived and added to the 2-0 win over University last week, for two wins in two games.

The match was preceded by a minute's silence for young Technical player Kieran Parsons, who died earlier in the week.

At Tonga Park, University had another bad weekend as Caversham notched up a 3-1 win over the students, and Roslyn Wakari posted its biggest score for years to beat Northern 9-0 in front of a happy home crowd at Ellis Park.

Blair Bates led the Roslyn spree with four goals, both Isaac Nicholson and Rupert Mark grabbed hat tricks, and Northern conceded an own goal.
