Football: Emphasis this week on battle for third

The emphasis switches this week in Footballsouth's Premier League, as close rivals Roslyn-Wakari and Mosgiel battle for third place in the competition.

Roslyn possibly has the harder task to maintain third since it plays Dunedin Technical at Ellis Park and needs three points to keep a one-point lead over Mosgiel.

At its best, Roslyn is capable of quality attacking football, but too often this season its form has been erratic and the team has not played to its potential.

Its consistent performers have been Sam Mepham and Tim Mather in midfield, utility James Watson and defenders Dave Shaw and Mike Cunningham.

Frontrunners Tim Dalman, Tom Connor and John Rae are yet to hit the consistent form which could score goals against any defence.

Through thick and thin, Technical has ground out consistent results all season and, even with a weakened side last week, was unlucky not to share the points with Caversham.

Mosgiel's hurdle is University in the early kick off at the Caledonian Ground, where a win could have coach Mike McGarry's side leapfrog Roslyn into third place.

Mosgiel's recent form has produced a 3-2 win over Northern, a 0-0 draw with Spirit and a 3-0 loss to Technical.

The Plainsmen are playing tidy, attacking football and have a good mix of youth and experience.

McGarry continues to be worth the price of admission despite niggling injuries, Shayne Danielson is still a hungry striker, Tim Dunn generates wide pace, young legs in Reg Coldicott, Luke Burgess and the Day brothers, Morgan and Curtiss, add zip, while Matt Brook and big Tom Bekkers dominate defence.

Last time out, University earned a 2-2 draw with goals to Dan Grice and Dom Higgins doing the damage, so Mosgiel will be alert to the students' threat.

Another big game emerges for Grants Braes - rated as the most improved side in the FPL - and, at home against Northern at Ocean Grove, the seasiders need three points to reach their highest placing.

Coach Al Laidler's side grabbed its first away win of the season with a shock 4-3 win over Spirit in Invercargill last week.

Braes has 13 points, while Northern, after a disappointing season, has 10 points of a possible 39.

However, Northern will have targeted this match for a win, which should make for a ferocious encounter.

Caversham starts as favourite against Spirit in the main game at the Caledonian.

However, tucked in among Golden Boot candidates Burgess (11) and Robbie Deeley (10), Invercargill striker Mark Caldow also has 10 goals, plus the temperament and skill to possibly improve that tally.

Bottom-placed Green Island travels to play Queenstown, which ended a four-match losing streak last week with a 3-1 win over University.
