Today's match between Caversham and Roslyn-Wakari at the Caledonian Ground will decide where the Footballsouth Premier League trophy will reside for the next year.
Though his side has had a mortgage on the trophy, with nine wins in 10 years, Caversham coach Steve Fleming has recently been carrying it with him on match day.
"I took it to all the recent games with Dunedin Technical, just in case we had to give it away, but after three wins over Tech, it has remained in the back seat of my car," Fleming said.
Caversham clawed its way back into contention, cutting a nine-point lead by Technical, no mean feat considering Technical coach Mike Fridge had Golden Boot winner Aaron Burgess at his disposal.
Burgess has 32 goals for the season.
"Our attack was more evenly spread," Fleming said.
"We have a handy trio of strikers in David Dugdale, Tom Jackson and Robbie Deeley, who have scored over 40 goals between them, and I am happy with that.
"And just as important to me is the fact that Technical failed to score against us in the last three encounters, so our defence is also playing well."
In today's 2.45pm kick-off at the Caledonian, Caversham will start without Patrick Fleming, who returned to the United States on Monday, while a hip injury is likely to consign Darren Overton to the bench.
Tied with Technical, which has a better goal difference, on 39 points, Caversham needs at least a draw today against Roslyn to win the league.
If it loses, Technical will win.
Roslyn will be looking to regain its early season form and spoil Caversham's party, but it will require an immense improvement from coach Terry Boylan's side, which is now 12 points behind the leaders.
Without the unavailable Mike Cunningham and James Vaughan, captain Ben Keats faces a giant task to inspire Roslyn in his last match for the club before heading to Wellington.
Other end-of-season senior matches today feature Northern and Grants Braes at the Gardens, University and Mosgiel at Logan Park, and a Roslyn-Wakari XI and Technical at Ellis Park.
