Well above his grade

How long before Hugo Bogue is in vogue with the Otago selectors?

Not long if he keeps scoring big centuries.

Yesterday, the 15-year-old Wakatipu High School pupil blasted 143 from 142 balls for Otago against Central Districts at the under-19 tournament in Lincoln.

The key part of the last sentence was "the 15-year-old".

The right-hander opener is playing well above his grade but is certainly not out of his depth.

Just last month he clubbed 101 not out off 163 balls for Albion in the Dunedin premier grade. It was his debut. They were a couple of terrific knocks.

There was a bit of Finn Allen about the way he went about yesterday’s effort.

He clouted 18 fours and a six.

His hand-eye co-ordination looks exceptional and he hits the cut shot with frightening power and precision.

His knock was the backbone of Otago’s 350 for seven.

Central Districts replied with 215 to lose by 135 runs.

Henry Scott took four for 27 and Zac Cumming continued his strong tournament with a haul of three for 31.

Bogue gave notice of his prowess last summer when he swatted 295 not out during a 40-over contest against St Thomas of Canterbury College.
