Otago and White Fern spinner Leigh Kasperek has broken her most valuable finger.

Kasperek has been ruled out of the White Ferns tour of South Africa after she sustained an avulsion fracture to her right index finger during team training in South Africa last week.

She will be sidelined for eight weeks which is a blow to the offspinner and also to the White Ferns.

As well as missing the seven-match one-day series against South Africa, she will also miss the home series against Pakistan.

The series against Pakistan is crucial as the side looks to clinch its spot in the 2017 Women's World Cup.

White Ferns coach Haidee Tiffen said it was hard for Kasperek to take and she hoped the spinner would recover quickly.

''While it's obviously extremely disappointing for Leigh, and we wish her a swift recovery, she returns to Dunedin safe in the knowledge that the team has also had very good preparation here and a really good lead-in,'' Tiffen said.

''Playing seven one-day internationals is going to really test us physically and mentally.

''This is not an easy series, but our players are tracking well after the first week of preparation here.''

Kasperek (24) made her debut for the White Ferns in India in June last year and has quickly established herself in the New Zealand team.

She took no part in the side's match against a South African emerging talent selection in Potchefstroom.

Tiffen confirmed 23-year-old Auckland Heart Maddy Green is on her way to South Africa as Kasperek's replacement on tour.

Allrounder Green last represented the national side in India last year, and adds top and middle-order batting options to an already deep complement of slow bowling.

Tiffen said the side's bowling stocks were well covered with the experience of off-spinning allrounder Amy Satterthwaite as well as leg break bowlers Sam Curtis and Erin Bermingham. Morna Nielsen was another option.

The White Ferns had a comfortable win over the emerging talent side, scoring 298 for six wickets in their 50 overs.

Captain Suzie Bates scored 72 as did Satterthwaite, both players retiring unbeaten after New Zealand batted first.

Otago's Katey Martin slammed a 35-ball half-century as part of an unbeaten 65 off just 46 balls before she, too, was retired against a flayed emerging players attack.

Pace weapon Lea Tahuhu led the visiting bowling attack with three for 25 off seven overs while the non-standard format gave Tiffen the chance to give more than 11 players a run in the side's sole 50-over workout before Saturday's opening ODI in Kimberley. The match starts at 9pm (NZ time).
