Cricket: Redmond sending message

The Black Caps are looking for a test opener or two and they could do a lot worse than Aaron Redmond.

The Otago right-hander is closing in on a thousand first-class runs this summer and that is remarkable for a couple of reasons.

For a start, only one batsman has scored more than a thousand first-class runs in a season for Otago and that was Glenn Turner - one of New Zealand's greatest batsmen.

But what makes Redmond's achievement so special is that he endured a horrific form slump last season which resulted in him being dropped in all three formats.

Yesterday the former Black Cap underlined just how fickle form can be, smoking his third first-class century (152 from 211 deliveries) for the summer and taking his season tally to 936.

Contrast that with the 157 runs he scored at 14.27 last year and it is quite a startling turnaround.

''Cricket is a funny game. One week you score runs and the next you won't,'' Redmond said.

''I'm just glad I've got some consistency back in my game.''

With Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum expected to drop down the order in the test line-up, and incumbent Martin Guptill out for the rest of the season to allow surgery on a thumb injury, there is an opportunity for a new combination.

Canterbury captain Peter Fulton appears the front-runner and has been scoring plenty of runs, but Redmond also mounts a very compelling argument.

''I have had a good season and all that but I'm not going to get to carried away. I spent seasons chasing it [an international opportunity] and perhaps to my detriment.

''Whatever happens, happens. I'll just keep playing cricket and the main thing is I'm enjoying it again.''

Redmond whacked three sixes and 19 fours in his innings and got his team on the front foot. Sam Wells contributed 81 and Jimmy Neesham smashed 48 from 55 to help Otago post 378 in reply to Wellington's first innings total of 255.

Wellington spinner Jeetan Patel did his national selection prospects no harm, taking five for 80 from 40.1 overs.

Seamer Mark Gillespie, though, had a tough day. He took one for 111 from 22 overs and bowled eight no-balls.

At stumps on day two at the Basin Reserve, Wellington was 33 for one and trails Otago by 90 runs.

Redmond is likely to get an opportunity to perhaps go past a thousand runs. It is a significant milestone but whatever happens he planned on sending former team-mate Craig Cumming a text to let him know he bumped him out of second place.
