Aaron Redmond and Neil Broom rediscovered their touch with 85 runs apiece to help Otago seal a dramatic two-wicket win against Canterbury in a one-day warm-up match in Rangiora yesterday.

The pair have been consistent contributors for Otago in recent years but were well below their best last summer.

Redmond, in particular, had a terrible run and was dropped from all three formats.

But the former international batted beautifully yesterday and will take a lot of confidence from the knock. Likewise, Broom was back at his best and helped his side chase down Canterbury's formidable total of 293 for seven. Neil Wagner clipped the winning runs through mid-wicket with just two balls to spare.

"I was really pleased for Aaron," Otago coach Vaughn Johnson said.

"It has been a bit of a light year for him but he has come back and played really well today and Neil did the same. There were a lot of little partnerships as well. It was a good day's work, really good." While Johnson was pleased with his team's batting effort, the bowling performance was a mixture.

"We started well. James McMillan bowled very well and Neil Wagner started OK. But we let it slip through the middle period with a bad ball every over.

"The deck was slightly quicker and 260 was probably par, so maybe we conceded 30 too many."

McMillan and Sam Wells were the pick of the Otago bowlers with two wickets apiece from seven overs.

George Worker and Shanan Stewart top-scored for Canterbury with 83 and Tom Latham whacked 40.

The sides will play one twenty/20 match today, rather than two games which were previously planned.
