The 26-year-old was named in an initial 30-man squad for the twenty/20 World Cup, which begins late next month, but broke his thumb while fielding for Otago in the Plunket Shield match against Northern Districts in Whangarei earlier this week.
"I've had a few days to think about it and there is nothing much you can do about it," Broom said when asked how he was coping with the disappointment.
Broom was fielding at short cover and moved quickly to his left to stop a shot from centurion Brad Wilson.
"It was just a lame bit of fielding. He didn't hit it that hard and just sort of pushed it out to me.
"But I got it on the wrong point of the thumb and it dislocated about 90deg out the other way.
"A little bit of bone was poking out the other side, so it wasn't looking that great."
Broom expects to be sidelined for the next seven weeks while the bone in his left hand heals.
While he was cursing his misfortune his younger brother, Darren (24), made the most of his first-class debut, scoring 119 to help Otago overhaul Northern's first-innings total of 465 for nine declared.
"I didn't see any of it but he must have batted pretty well.
"The boys said he looked really good, so it is a bloody good start."
Neil Broom has been in fine touch for Otago this summer with three first-class centuries before Christmas.
He is the competition's fifth-leading runs-scorer with 608 runs at an average of 67.55, and in 37 games for the Otago he has scored 2478 runs at 46.75, including seven tons.
"That's me done for the summer," Broom said.
"I suppose I'll get this sorted out and look forward to getting back into it.
"Hopefully, I'll get on a few winter tours. But if I don't I just stay in Dunedin and work on my game in the nets."
