Some stay the course, at home and abroad

Otago has had plenty of talented school athletes in recent times but many have given it away. Jeff Cheshire looks at where a handful of them have ended up.

 

Todd Johnston

Event: Sprints

What he did: Broke an Oceania record with the Otago Boys’ High School junior 4x100m relay team in 2007.

Now: Had a couple of years off before returning to the sport, but has not raced since 2014.

 

Andrew Whyte

Event: 400m

What he did: The South Otago High School pupil took more than a second off the national schools record in the 400m in 2011.

Left school and then, after time in Dunedin, headed to the University of Texas.

Now: Returned early from Texas and, hampered by injury, failed to qualify for Rio. Decided earlier this year to move to Christchurch and focus on 800m. Not been sighted since.

Event: Middle-long distance running

What he did: Impressive performer on the cross-country and road race scene, along with being one of the dominant middle-distance runners in Otago.

Now: Finished school last year and has continued to impress in cross-country and longer distance races over the winter. A key athlete to keep in the sport.

 

Hanna English

Event: Middle-long distance runner

What she did: Won national age-grade medals in the 3000m and 5000m.

Now: Obtained a scholarship to Saint Mary’s College in California earlier this year.

 

Rebekah Greene

Event: Middle-distance running

What she did: 1500m and 3000m Otago women’s and national secondary schools record-holder, set in 2011.

Now: Left for the United States in 2013 after getting a scholarship to the University of Florida and remains there. Has been hampered by injury.

 

Chris McNoe

Event: 400m

What he did: A strong runner who notably was key in the Otago Boys’ High School national champion 4x400m relay win several years ago. Won eight titles at the school sports in year 13 in 2014.

Now: Plays premier rugby for Zingari-Richmond and no longer competes.

 

Mackenzie Haugh

Event: Long jump, high jump, hurdles

What he did: Proved competitive nationally in both the high jump and long jump, as well as the hurdles. Moved to Nelson for his last year of school.

Now: Returned to Dunedin. Played touch at a national level and a member of this year’s Otago sevens side. No longer doing athletics.

 

Gavin Stark

Event: Sprints

What he did: Exceptional sprinter who won the 100m junior boys title at the national schools athletics champs in 2010.

Now: Has been in the Otago rugby team the past two years and plays on the wing for University in the premier club competition.

 

Shauna Pali

Event: Middle-long distance running

What she did: Impressed over a variety of distances and won a national medal in the junior 5000m.

Now: Had a scholarship at the University of North Texas.
