On a rare occasion, Invercargill pupils are being encouraged to sleep late this weekend — but all in the name of charity.

Squash City is promoting its second edition of Squashathon, where club players, community members and coach Kevin Muir will be playing for 24 hours straight.

Organiser Donna Evans said the event worked as a fundraiser for junior players to compete in out-of-town tournaments as well as for Hospice Southland.

It followed a successful inaugural event in 2022, when Muir came up with the idea as a way to fundraise money for the Southland Charity Hospital, she said.

"Kevin has a few friends that have been diagnosed with cancer and wanted to do something to be able to raise money and the Southland Charity Hospital was a relatively new one.

"This year we chose Hospice Southland as we’ve all had someone who’s been supported by them."

Last year’s Squashathon raised $15,000 for the charity hospital and $2500 for the junior players.

She said it was a way for the club to give back to the community while having fun.

The club had about 30 junior players aged between 12 and 18 years old and they were looking forward to the event.

"They are super excited. They can stay playing until late and do something different."

Muir would be available for a 30-minute coaching session during the 24 hours, there would be demonstrations and all four courts would be available for people to come along and play.

A sausage sizzle would also be running on Saturday night and anyone was encouraged to attend the event, she said.

"It’s open to everybody to come down, support us and have a go."

  • The Squash City squashathon will start at 10am on Saturday and end at 10am on Sunday, at its Onslow St, Invercargill. Bookings for the coaching session needed to be made in advance.
