A male was flown to hospital after he was injured in a motorcycle crash near Wanaka last night.
A police spokeswoman said they were called at 6.25pm after the motorcycle drove into a fence on SH8 at the intersection of the Lindis Pass and Tarras Rd.
A St John spokesman said it was notified at 6.18pm and sent an ambulance, a doctor from Wanaka and a helicopter from Dunedin.
Tarras Fire Brigade controller Mark Davidson said the crash happened at the Tarras Golf Club corner where there had been many previous crashes.
The rider was on a large Ducati motorcycle, heading south with a group of riders when he ran off the road.
He suffered a broken leg, Mr Davidson said, and because of weather issues he was taken by rescue helicopter to Timaru Hospital rather than Dunedin.
Mr Davidson has been pushing for the New Zealand Transport Agency to reinstate a guardrail at the corner.
He considered a guardrail would have sent a stronger signal to the rider that he was approaching a tight bend.
An NZTA spokesman said in July the safety of the corner was being reviewed.
