An Invercargill man drowned while collecting shellfish at Ocean Beach in Bluff this afternoon.
The 42-year-old man was with friends about 2.30pm when he appeared to get into difficulties in the water.
He was brought to shore by his friends who immediately started CPR on him.
Specialist medical assistance arrived at the scene shortly afterwards and continued CPR, but the man could not be resuscitated.
The man's name will be released once next-of kin have been advised.
