Southland Museum and Art Gallery is collaborating with the Invercargill Public Art Gallery to develop a shared exhibition space in a building on the corner of Kelvin and Don Sts.
Co-managers Sarah Brown and David Luoni said they were inspired by the exhibition concepts the joint curatorial team were developing.
"Our goal is to keep the content dynamic and rotating, rather than a permanent fixed display,'' Mr Luoni said.
Southland Museum chairwoman Toni Biddle said a name for the space was still being worked on.
The museum was closed in April 2018 due to safety concerns.
The art gallery is temporarily at the Invercargill Public Library after being moved from the Don St site to make way for the proposed ILT hotel build.
