To celebrate, Invercargill city councillor and naturalist Lloyd Esler promoted yesterday's Fungal Foray at Queens Park in Invercargill.
"It is an annual event and here we can find a big variety of types. Autumn is the best time because fungus forms in a warm and moist environment."
Toddler Oliver Roux (2, pictured right) was very interested in the "mushroom hunt". His mother Lucy Roux said it was the first time they had taken part.
"He is very curious and is loving the variety of shapes and colours.
