Twenty-two young people from around the area lined up at the top of Whites Rd, City Forests, in their home-made trolleys to make two runs down the hill to the finishing line.
Dad Chris and son Logan Morrell (11), worked for more than a week on Logan's trolley.
"The parts came off old bikes," Logan said.
Both father and son agreed the hardest part of building the trolley was getting the braking system right - the back brakes were operated by a foot pedal, and the front by hand-operated levers.
Logan broke last year's record of 1.39 minutes on his first run and took the title in the Zoomers class.
Senior Constable Tania Grant, of Balclutha, brought a speed camera to the race, with the fastest run clocked by Callum Deans at 68kmh, clearing the 1.2km track in 1.29 minutes, the fastest time of the day.
The "Our Voice" programme is a Clutha District Youth Council initiative and has been funded with a $5000 grant from the Ministry of Youth Development.
The programme runs until April 17 and offers youth around the Clutha District the chance to participate in activities such as mountain biking, horse riding, being a radio disk jockey, golf, surfing and participating in the Amazing Race, Milton.
