About 50 people attended a public meeting in Owaka this week to discuss ways to make the town more attractive.
After watching a presentation of streetscape designs by Lincoln University landscape architecture students, those present discussed which of the designs would reflect the historic roots of Owaka, and which would entice visitors to stop and spend time in the town.
The group liked the idea of building public toilets in the style of an old railway station, which would hark back to one of Owaka's main early industries.
Another popular idea was using the lives of historic people as themes for guided walks in and around the town.
The Lincoln students visited the town in April, and the meeting heard that one of the students wanted to continue working with Owaka as an individual project.
After the presentation, a committee was formed to work on encouraging the rest of the community to engage with the ideas and give feedback.
The committee will meet for its first official appointment next month.
