Some farmers with land beside the flooded Pomahaka River shifted stock on Monday night, fearing the river would spill over into their pad-docks, but this failed to happen.
Tapanui district farmer Robert Kane said he had moved stock to higher ground on Monday night.
The floodwaters peaked about 2am yesterday, and he began shifting his stock back as the water receded yesterday afternoon.
Natalie Morris, of Conical Hill, said the Pomahaka River, which ran beside her property, was "flowing from bank to bank, but not flooding yet".
Mrs Morris said there was "barely any water" on her property.
The river was still above its first flood warning level at 3.30pm yesterday, flowing at 198cumecs, but steadily receding.
Once the Pomahaka River started to recede, work began to clear the debris that had piled up under the State Highway 90 bridge.
Darrell White, Clutha area manager for Downer EDI Works, said the build-up of branches, logs and debris under the bridge did not cause any structural damage.
