'Drongo' Balclutha driver astounds police

Balclutha police are amazed at the behaviour of a 41-year-old Balclutha man who had two cars impounded in less than a week.

The man, whose driver's licence was suspended, was called "a drongo" by police after he drove a friend to the police station last Wednesday.

The man was recognised and arrested on driving offences.

The car was impounded and the man was bailed to appear in the Balclutha District Court on February 23.

At 10.10pm on Friday, the same man was stopped on Cromer St, Balclutha, where he was arrested for driving while suspended, and the car was impounded.

• A Balclutha woman's car keys were removed from her car while she shopped on Saturday afternoon.

The car was parked on Clyde St between 1pm and 2pm.

Sergeant Martin Bull, of Balclutha, said police would like to hear from anyone who had seen a set of Holden keys on a Jim Beam keyring.

• Police are investigating the theft of money from Independent Tyre Specialists in Balclutha on Saturday.

Sgt Bull said someone had gone into the building and taken money from the till.

• A 17-year-old Milton youth arrested for disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest spent a night in the Balclutha police cells on Sunday.

Sgt Bull said the youth was upset at not being allowed in to the Hotel South Otago, and resisted when police tried to arrest him for disorderly behaviour.

He is due to appear in court on February 23.

• A 72-year-old Milton man who was stopped for drink-driving in Milton on Sunday evening returned a reading of 706mcg and will appear on February 23 in the Balclutha District Court.
