Two people are dead after a serious motorcycle crash in central Timaru last night.
A St John spokesman said they were called to the scene of a motorcycle accident on Evans St (SH1) between Trafalgar St and Beverley Rd about 7.45pm.
Two ambulances and one rapid response vehicle were dispatched but both victims died at the scene.
A police spokeswoman said they were notified of a serious crash about 7.45pm.
An investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing
The road was closed with diversions but reopened about 3am.
The crash was the second fatal accident on South Island roads yesterday.
A further two people died as a result of a crash in Marlborough yesterday evening.
Police said they were notified of the two-vehicle crash on State Highway 63 in the Wairau Valley, west of Blenheim, shortly after 6pm.
One person died at the scene, and another died a few hours later.
