Tramper airlifted after injuring ankle

An Invercargill woman was airlifted from the Dart Hut in Mount Aspiring National Park today after injuring her ankle.

St John Queenstown station manager Keith Raymond said the 53-year-old woman suffered the "minor" injury yesterday while walking the challenging Cascade Saddle route with a group of trampers.

She left the hut this morning with the intention of walking out, but was unable to continue because of the injury and an underlying cardiac issue that was exacerbated by the situation, Mr Raymond said.

She was picked up by a Lakes District Air Rescue Trust helicopter early this afternoon and taken to Queenstown's Lakes District Hospital for assessment.
