The Southern Stampede ice hockey team will work on its defence for its doubleheader against the Swarm in Queenstown this weekend, following two close losses to the Canterbury Red Devils in the resort over the weekend.

Captain Simon Glass said while his side played well and picked up two points, ''we were certainly after a few more. It was not the ideal result''.

On Saturday night, the home side was leading 4-1 after the first period and 8-4 after the third.

However, a five-minute spell in which the Stampede players had a ''consciousness lapse'' was enough for the visitors to capitalise and the game was tied 8-8 at the end of normal time.

''Once they got one or two, it was hard to slow them down.

''Eight goals should be enough to win a game of ice hockey. We've really got to work on our defence a lot more. I think that's where we'll be focusing.

''We're pretty disappointed with how Saturday night went.''

The teams rallied for the second game on Sunday night and Canterbury went two from two, winning 6-5 in overtime.

However, Glass was upbeat.

"We're only half-way through the season and we're in a better spot this year than we were at the same time last year.''

The Stampede will play the Swarm for the second time this season in Queenstown on Friday and Saturday nights. The puck will drop at 7pm.

Glass said the last time the sides met, the Stampede had a win and an overtime loss.

The Stampede will be without Max Macharg (broken collar bone) and Michael Weber (separated shoulder), and a question mark remains over Bert Haines (torn ligament).
