Queenstown's only dedicated bike resort was officially opened for year-round biking yesterday, offering 40km of trails constructed over about 450ha.

Rabbit Ridge Bike Resort, at Gibbston, was opened earlier in the year for tours and the first Saturday of every month for ''locals''.

Manager Steve Norton said the winter season had gone ''really well'' with steady interest. Now the resort was open to the public from 10am to 3pm daily and

hours would be extended from 8am to 8pm during summer.

''There's great riding to be had at the moment.

''The trails have dried out and bedded in nicely as we'd planned''

New trails were expected to be opened this month, including the intermediate and downhill tracks Long Drop and The Hare. Existing trails including the beginner's Bunny Track and the Easy Up track had also been adapted.

Future expansion plans include completion of all the planned trails as well as a new ''Dog Riding'' trail, which would be for riders wanting to bring their dogs.

''We've been inundated with requests from people wanting to bring dogs on to the resort but we appreciate that wouldn't appeal to everyone.

''By creating a dedicated dog track we're catering to everyone's needs.''

Mr Norton said the resort would hold its first bike race on February 22. The ''3-6-12'' event would enable bikers to enter in a three-hour, six-hour or 12-hour endurance race.

Day, concession, six-month and annual passes for Rabbit Ridge Bike Resort are now available online at www.rabbitridge.co.nz.
