Off piste: Good job for anyone who loves snow and working with people

After a slow start, Queenstown's ski areas are pumping, and in this week's Off Piste, the Queenstown Times managed to get five minutes with Coronet Peak head of retail Toshi Miyata to find out about his job.


Why did you choose this job?
The job chose me! I was looking for a winter job and the retail position became available.

Is it your first season?
No, this is my eighth season and my ninth year in Queenstown.

Where are you from?
The deep jungle of Fiordland.

What kind of job were you doing before this?
Seasonal position as a Routeburn Track guide with Ultimate Hikes.

How would you describe your job?
Running your own small business in a big organisation.

What's the best thing about it?
Being close to the snow.

What are some of the challenges?
It's like being on call 24/7.

What skills or qualities do you need?
You need to be good with figures, quick thinking and have a sense of humour.

Anyone who loves snow and working with people.

What's the best advice you have for people who move to Queenstown for seasonal work?
Enjoy the snow!

What's the most interesting, amusing or surprising on-the-job experience for you so far this year?
Developing the new entertainment department at Coronet Peak and having a karaoke session up on the mountain with our staff.
