No extra state aid for Open

The Government has indicated it will not be boosting its funding for the Michael Hill New Zealand Golf Open.

The third and final open in the current arrangement with New Zealand Golf will be played at The Hills exclusive golf course in Arrowtown at the end of the month.

Michael Hill previously told the Otago Daily Times that government support was needed to make the $1.2 million event sustainable.

He said there needed to be more capital investment at a higher level.

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bill English said it was up to New Zealand Golf.

"Michael Hill has made a fantastic contribution to it.

New Zealand Golf will know the commercial issues better than the Government will.

It's to them to look for a commercial solution," he said.

Michael Hill and New Zealand Golf would have to go through the "usual process" of seeking government funding.

"The Government has supported it in the past and no doubt organisers will approach the Ministry of Economic Development," he said.

The Southland Times reported the Open last year received $100,000 from the ministry.

This year's Open will run at The Hills from January 28 to 31.
