Frankton plan change a step closer

Two plan change recommendations accepted by the Queenstown Lakes District Council last week may result in the expansion of Frankton's commercial and shopping areas.

The council approved its submission on Plan Change 43 - Frankton mixed use zone - which would enable Shotover Property Investment Ltd to have rezoned a block of land for commercial use.

The 2ha block, zoned low density residential, is opposite the Queenstown Events Centre across State Highway 6.

It would become a "special zone" to allow for commercial, showroom, office, visitor accommodation, education, health-care, and retail facilities.

In its submission the council said the plan change would have the potential to increase traffic on to the state highway across the road from the council-owned Queenstown Event Centre.

The submission, also made on behalf of Lakes Leisure, said the traffic implications would have to be further assessed.

Last month Shotover Property Investment Ltd spokesman John Edmonds said the developers had no particular plans for the land, but if the rezoning was successful it would lead to "other opportunities".

Submissions would close on December 9 and the process would then go to a hearing in next April.

Meanwhile, the council has accepted commissioners' recommendations on plan change 34 - Remarkables Park zone.

After a hearing in August, commissioners David Whitney, Bob Nixon and Brian Waddell made several amendments to the plan change.

Those included rezoning land north of the Kawarau River from rural general zoning to Remarkables Park zone as well as changes to noise control and airport-related controls.
