Forecourt brawl follows incident

A road rage incident escalated into a brawl in the forecourt of a Queenstown petrol station.

Sergeant Kate Pirovano, of Queenstown, said a 42-year-old man from Christchurch ''allegedly had a bit of a road infraction'' about 1pm on Saturday on McBride St, Frankton, forcing a 29-year-old Queenstown man to take evasive action.

There were some ''alleged gesticulations'' before the visitor kept driving along McBride St, followed by the Queenstown man.

Sgt Pirovano said the visitor pulled into the Mobil station forecourt, on Frankton Rd, followed by the 29-year-old.

Both men got out of their vehicles and there was a verbal altercation and, with ''tensions running high'' the incident took a violent physical turn, captured on CCTV cameras.

''The older male [allegedly] head-butted the younger male and there were punches allegedly thrown by him,'' she said.

The younger man ended up on the ground and was punching back in self-defence before the 42-year-old's partner intervened.

Sgt Pirovano said the 42-year-old got back into his vehicle and drove along Frankton Rd, followed by the Queenstown man who at that stage called police on the *555 number.

The vehicles were stopped a short time later.

Sgt Pirovano said the 29-year-old sustained a bleeding nose and was charged with disorderly behaviour, while the 42-year-old was charged with assault.

Both are expected to appear in the Queenstown District Court today.
