As the first round of the 2013 Central Otago Premier rugby championship draws to a close, the fight is on for teams hoping for a top six placing, ensuring the remaining fortnight will provide plenty of on-field entertainment.

Arrowtown beat Matakanui-Combined 74-0 at Jack Reid Park on Saturday, with hooker/prop Henry Bensemann putting in a player-of-the-day performance.

The game was an opportunity for coach Hayden Finch to explore the depth of his squad, with all 25 players putting in impressive performances.

With some players having started every game and representing Central Otago during the Queen's Birthday Weekend Topp Cup fixture in Lawrence, Finch said it was a good opportunity to rest some players and give others a chance to stretch their legs.

This Saturday, the Arrowtown team will travel to Clyde to take on a tough Clyde-Earnscleugh side, battling to make the top six.

Arrowtown is third on the table at present, and the Bulls will play second-placed

Maniototo on June 22.

In pole position is last year's champion Wakatipu, which will play its first game in a fortnight against Upper Clutha this Saturday.

With no rugby over Queen's Birthday and a bye at the weekend, the unbeaten Wakatipu side will be well rested for the clash.

Wakatipu coach Damian Petre said the game would be played at the Queenstown Recreation Ground.
