Work on the project started two years ago.
St John's current Oamaru ambulance station, in Coquet St, has four ambulances, 6.5 permanent staff and up to 24 volunteers all operating out of the existing site, which was built 35 years ago.
In May, Oamaru area chairman Terry Kent said circumstances had changed and new facilities were needed.
``With health and safety and where we currently find ourselves ... we've come to the point where we need to look at the operation's needs to be built more for the purposes of today.
``Our permanent staff were working Monday to Friday office hours. Now they work 24 hours a day, seven days a week,'' Mr Kent said.
``We're doing nothing more than due diligence.''
This week outgoing area executive officer Felicia McCrone said the project was definitely going ahead, but she could not go into detail, including about the proposed location for the station.
The project was now at a feasibility study stage, she said.
``We'd hate to do a rush job that didn't fit the community's needs.''
