Offbeat evening on men's health

Waitaki men are being encouraged to become ''healthy bastards''.

On December 8, the Kurow Medical Centre is hosting a men's health evening, ''Healthy Bastards'', with guest speaker Dr Dave Baldwin.

Dr Baldwin, who regularly flies to the South in his Cessna to undertake medical checks for pilots in rural areas, has been using his down-to-earth humour to draw attention to men's health.

Master of ceremonies Steve Hotton, of Kurow, said Dr Baldwin's humour really helped to get across a serious message.

''Healthy Bastards is interactive and informative around men's health,'' he said.

''It's all about men looking after themselves ... breaking through that staunchness.''

Mr Hotton said the idea for the event, to be held at the Kurow Memorial Hall, had come about after some ''untimely deaths'' of young men in the Waitaki and Hakataramea Valleys.

Men from the wider Waitaki region are encouraged to come to Kurow for the event and bring wives, partners and girlfriends, Mr Hotton said.

Healthy Bastards would be a fun and a ''wee bit naughty'' night out, he said.

As well as the main presentation by Dr Baldwin, there will also be health organisations present offering free services such as blood pressure and diabetes checks.

Entry is by gold coin donation, with money raised going to Waitaki St John.
