Nurse Jane Crashley, of the Kurow Medical Centre, stands in front of the centre's new first-response 4WD vehicle that will respond to medical emergencies in Kurow and the surrounding area.

Practice manager Jules Elliot said the vehicle was bought about two months ago after a successful grant of $26,000 from Meridian Waitaki Community Fund came through.

Mrs Elliot said the vehicle could be the difference between life and death in the rural area.

She said it had just been sign-printed and was on active duty.

The 4WD replaced a vehicle that had become run-down, and would complement the town's ambulance service.

''We are situated in a remote rural area and a lot of the call-outs we attend are in areas that require 4WD access and of course it is extremely important to have a reliable vehicle.''

The vehicle was part of a scheme called Primary Response in Medical Emergency that aimed to ensure high-quality access to pre-hospital emergency treatment in areas where there was a shortage of advanced life-saving paramedics.
