Construction of a 30km sub-transmission line between Network Waitaki's Kurow and Duntroon substations is progressing well, but motorists travelling along State Highway 83 can expect delays soon as new wires are installed.
The new sub-transmission line is being built to increase the security of electricity supply to the Kurow and Duntroon areas.
''In general, this [line] will follow the existing line route along State Highway 83 with taller poles and an additional circuit above the existing conductors,'' Network Waitaki project engineer Craig Conlan said.
Construction began in February.
Network Waitaki crews are working between the Kurow River and the Kurow Winery at present.
Mr Conlan said the work would result in delays for motorists on SH83 soon.
Notice of delays would be given on roadside signs three days in advance.
''There will be traffic delays of up to 10 minutes each on sections of State Highway 83 while we install new wires,'' he said.
There will also be planned power outages along the line as Network Waitaki replaces sections of poles and conductors.
Affected consumers will be notified in advance.
Mr Conlan asked the public not to enter any cordoned work site areas without permission from the site foreman.
