Songs and passages from classic children's books filled the air at the Oamaru Opera House auditorium yesterday.

Performers from Waitaki gathered to put on acts to help raise money for the Ruby Scholarship.

The performing arts scholarship was created in memory of Oamaru girl Ruby Marris (5).

Ruby was killed on February 21, 2015 near Moeraki, Otago, after a tourist crashed into the car carrying Ruby's family.

Oamaru vocal coach Vanessa Kelly-Brown set up the scholarship.

She said Sunday's performances from artists aged from 7 to 18 went well and there was strong support and positive feedback from the crowd of about 250.

She said a final figure of what was raised was not available yet, but believed it was somewhere in the low thousands.

Mrs Kelly-Brown said Ruby's family were also pleased with how the event had gone.

"Lots of people really loved it,'' she said.

Mrs Kelly-Brown said the scholarship was for a selected student to study performing arts nationally or internationally.

Funding would also be available for families with talented children who could not pay a local vocal or drama coach.

She said she hoped the fundraiser would become an annual event and the scholarship would be open in 2017.
