Canvassing young on needs

Safer Waitaki wants to know what more can be done to meet the needs of the district's young people.

It has launched a survey to give people aged 14 to 25 a voice.

''We're trying to explore how our young people are engaging with the community so that we can ascertain: what are the areas of need; what are the gaps that need to be filled?'' Safer Waitaki Coalition chairman Paul Olsen said.

The survey results would be used to develop policy and make recommendations to the Waitaki District Council to meet the needs of the young people, Mr Olsen said.

''We can advise council or community groups to change, or provide, or modify, so that we respond to their needs and aspirations,'' he said.

''If we truly want a safer Waitaki, we have to engage our young people and walk the journey with them. This needs to be a partnership in which they get a voice,'' he said.

Questions cover topics such as community participation, perception of local facilities, what more could be available, health and wellbeing, alcohol and drugs, community safety, education, employment and seeking help.

The survey, which takes about 10 minutes to complete, can be found at www.saferwaitaki.co.nz
