Awakino ski season over but for groups

Awakino's ski season is all but over for 2014.

After a late July opening this year, the club-operated skifield had has now closed, and will open only if required for group bookings while the snow lasts.

After a late start, the field did open for four ''good'' weekends, Waitaki Ski Club secretary David Campbell said.

''It's been a tough season to start with, but we've finished not too badly,'' Mr Campbell said.

''They've been good weekends. We've had some good numbers through.''

Pre-season snowfalls teased ski club members into thinking they might be able to open early this year, but a spell of warm weather put paid to that idea.

As a club-operated skifield, Awakino does not have the same issues as commercial fields in terms of scheduled openings.

''The big thing for us this year is we had spent a lot more time and resources bringing [the access road] up to scratch,'' Mr Campbell said.

Substantial roadworks to the access road were to repair flood damage from 2013.

''[Financially] it's been quite a big hit on us,'' he said.

This summer, volunteers will work on the buildings, to keep them up to Department of Conservation requirements.

During the summer, Awakino is also popular for walking and mountain biking groups.
