Just like a new pattern, the WoolOn Creative Fashion event has been reshaped and improved.
''We've kept our traditional celebration of craft and wool but also tweaked it a bit to suit young and emerging designers,'' event manager Martin McPherson said.
It will be staged at the Dunstan High School gymnasium tomorrow night and Saturday night.
WoolOn is the final event in the annual Blossom Festival.
''The festival always finishes on a high note with WoolOn - it's without a doubt the most glamorous event held in Alexandra all year,'' he said.
The highest number of entries for several years will give the audience plenty to feast their eyes on.
Included in the 62 entries are 18 new designers. Regular entrants, many of them past winners, have also again shown their support.
''Our new sections this year - for under-23 young designers, aimed at those in tertiary studies, looking for a career in the fashion industry and the under-18 novice designer category - have been very well supported, so that's pleasing to see.''
The popular streetwear, special occasion, and avant-garde sections are included again and a new section called collections has been added.
It will feature three garments with a similar theme.
Machine-knitted and machine-woven garments have a section of their own this year and hand-knitted, hand-woven and crocheted garments will come under the handcrafted category.
Although the menswear section has been removed because of limited entries in past years, men's outfits can be entered in any section.
The judges this year are Tracey Kennedy, of the Otago Polytechnic School of Design, Touch Yarns owner Marnie Kelly, of Clyde, and designer Anne Lyon, of Cromwell.
The Otago Daily Times is the major sponsor of WoolOn.
Two of its former staff members, Deirdre Mackenzie and Janice Millis, were instrumental in getting the fashion event started 12 years ago, as part of the New Zealand Merino Shears, to showcase the use of wool in fashion.
The event became part of the festival programme 10 years ago.
Audiences get two chances to view the WoolOn entries being modelled - at a catwalk show tomorrow night or at Saturday night's gala, where patrons are seated around tables and food and wine is included in the ticket price.
The prize-winners are announced at the gala show and the evening rounds off with a performance by LA Social Club.
A total of $10,000 in prizemoney is up for grabs.
