Police are investigating a complaint from a Roxburgh woman that she was held against her will in the town on Thursday night.
Police said in a statement a man had appeared in the Alexandra District Court yesterday, charged with reckless driving and failing to stop after a short, high-speed chase through Roxburgh yesterday morning.
The man (21) was remanded on bail to appear at Alexandra on August 27. His licence was suspended for 28 days.
In a press release, Detective Ian Kerrisk said a Roxburgh officer was flagged down by a distressed woman in Scotland St about 8.30am yesterday. At the same time a man known to the woman drove past in a Honda car.
The officer tried to stop the car but it accelerated towards Alexandra, reaching speeds estimated in excess of 100kmh in a 50kmh zone outside the Roxburgh Area School when pupils were arriving.
After a chase of about 2km, the driver was stopped on the outskirts of Roxburgh near the Quail Haven subdivision.
The woman's complaint, that she was held against her will at a Scotland St address on Thursday night, was "of a serious nature" but it was too soon to comment on whether any charges would be laid, Det Kerrisk said.
Witnesses had been spoken to and a scene examination carried out at the address.
