Vincent board to help museum

After several attempts by the Alexandra Museum and Art Gallery to gain extra funding, the Vincent Community Board will include an extra $25,000 in next year's budget.

The museum receives about $38,000 a year from the board but needed a further $25,000, which director Brian Patrick this week assured the board would be enough to cover all operational costs.

The museum raises large amounts of money for its programmes but Mr Patrick said there were no funders for operational costs.

The council had received 98 submissions in support of the museum's approach and the board heard from a handful of residents and Mr Patrick in favour of increasing funding for Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery.

Central Otago District Council community facilities manager Grahame Smail asked the board for a $30,000 share of an expected $60,000 cost for a consultant to prepare a report on Molyneux Park.

A group is already looking at Molyneux Stadium to decide its future role in the community.

New Vincent Community Board member Barry Wills said he was part of a group that formed an overview of the park many years ago and he wondered what had happened to that report.

Mr Smail also requested $30,000 for landscaping around Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery.

Utility services manager Peter Greenwood had a list of increases for the board to consider.

An increase of $87,000 was needed to pay for the extra costs of transporting treated sludge to Victoria Flat.

An increase of $51,000 for the Alexandra physical works budget was sought to cover an increase in minor repairs and an extra $45,000 to pay for the number of water tobies being renewed as they wore out.

A contract rate for Clyde physical works would require a further $28,800, bringing the total extra costs presented to the board to $217,780.
