Sugarloaf water reservoir hearing postponed

A hearing on a proposal to build a two-million-litre water reservoir on the Sugarloaf hill near Cromwell has been postponed at the request of the Central Otago District Council, which wanted to build the reservoir.

An independent commissioner was to preside over a hearing for the application this week.

The council applied to itself to build a reservoir situated on a side of the Sugarloaf within an old gold sluicing site, to service the growing subdivision developments across State Highway 6.

It requested more time before the hearing, which will now likely be held next year.

Seven submissions have been received on the proposal - five of which were opposed, and two neutral.

The council's application stated the reservoir was needed to eventually connect Pisa subdivisions to the Cromwell town water supply and secure a supply up to national standards.

It stated there was no other appropriate site for the reservoir near Pisa Moorings.

If built, the reservoir would be almost 25m in diameter, 5m high and painted to blend in with the surroundings.

It would also be partly below ground.
