Residents petition council on road name

Multiple names for a Millers Flat road have led to confusion when emergency services respond to calls, residents say.

Last week, the Central Otago District Council considered a petition from 26 residents and a representative of the Millers Flat Fire Brigade, who wanted the confusion cleared up.

They asked for Millers Flat-Beaumont Rd to be called Craig Flat Rd from the end of Teviot Rd (at Faigan's Store) to the cattle-stop at Craig Flat.

From there to State Highway 8 at Beaumont, the road should remain as the Millennium Track, they said.

The council has proposed changing the name to Craig Flat Rd right through to Beaumont, saying it would eliminate any confusion with addresses, particularly if there was an emergency.

All homes would then have a Craig Flat Rd address.

Central Otago Mayor Tony Lepper said he "quite liked the Millennium Track name'' but conceded it was "universally acceptable'' to change the road name.

The public has been invited to make submissions on the proposal, until August 5.

Resident Jim Barclay started the ball rolling. He said the fire brigade was called to a vehicle fire on his property and was sent to Beaumont Station Rd.

He said it was the third time he was aware of that emergency services had been "misdirected in the area''.

The road was originally called Millers Flat-Beaumont Station Rd when Beaumont Station was one of the big Otago runs of the late 19th century, he said.

"After the subdivision of this property for soldier settlement, the northern section of this road was known as Craig Flat Rd in remembrance of Hugh Craig, a highly respected coach driver who took Richard John Seddon around the Otago goldfields in the late 1890s.

"To complicate matters further, the southern end of this road was reopened for general use as a track in 2000 and is called the Millennium Track.''

There was a variety of residential addresses on the road and existing road signs were equally confusing, with Millennium Track, Craig Flat Rd and Millers Flat-Beaumont Rd on display, Mr Barclay said.

The Teviot Valley Community Bd has supported the proposal.

A short section of the road is in the Clutha district, so that council will also need to go through a similar process to change the name.
