A nose-to-tail collision between a marked police car and another vehicle in the Kawarau Gorge on Monday night is being investigated.
Central Otago sub-area police commander Senior Sergeant Ian Kerrisk said there was minor damage to both cars.
The drivers of the vehicles, the sole occupants, were uninjured.
Both cars were travelling in the same direction on State Highway 6 when they collided about 6.35pm.
Snr Sgt Kerrisk declined to say which vehicle was in front.
Inquiries were continuing into the actions of both drivers and it was too early to speculate on whether any charges would be laid, he said.
