Quick action by Alexandra police yesterday resulted in a Lower Hutt man being arrested for the alleged theft of a greenstone adze from a Queenstown shop.
Queenstown police had been advised of the theft and alerted police around the region that four gang members had been seen leaving the shop.
Their vehicle was spotted at the Caltex petrol station in Alexandra and police moved in to talk to the occupants, who offered no resistance.
Sergeant Andy Reed said ‘‘one of the occupants put his hand up and said he was responsible for taking the property.''
Police said two of the gang members were from the North Island and two from the South Island.
A 33-year-old man will appear in the Alexandra District Court on April 9 charged with the theft.
