A trip using a historic form of carriage is being planned by the owner of Chatto Creek Tavern at the end of the month.

Lesley Middlemass has secured from Peter Robson, of Lochiel, near Winton, a replica of the Cobb and Co coaches that used to ply the Dunstan Trail. Five Morgan horses will pull the coach.

From April 25 to May 2 she plans to have the coach travel from Chatto Creek to Tiger Hill along the Otago Central Rail Trail. Five seats would available for passengers.

The trip would include a stop at a historic flume which was used to to take water across Chinky Gully.

Bill Hinchey would be there with his dogs to demonstrate trialling skills for visitors.

The trip would include a picnic lunch and a hot cup of tea and muffins while watching the dog trials.

"It is a chance for people to relive the past,'' Mrs Middlemass said.

"It would be ideal for a group of four or five to share an experience of the past,'' she said.

The Department of Conservation Central Otago area manager Mike Tubbs said Doc was considering the proposal before granting a concession.
