More than 270 curlers are expected to descend on Naseby for the national bonspiel on Monday and Tuesday.
A national bonspiel has been called at Naseby this week - the first outdoor curling championship in three years.

For the first time in more than 80 years, the event will be hosted in Naseby, rather than the Idaburn Dam at Oturehua.

The venue - Centennial Ponds - across the road from the indoor curling rink, has the required depth of ice for the two-day tournament, Naseby icemaster Jock Scott said.

The call went out today, giving notice of the event taking place on Monday and Tuesday, and more than 270 curlers, from the 36 clubs around New Zealand, are expected to travel to Naseby.

"This is going to be huge for Naseby and there's quite a lot involved in hosting it," Mr Scott said.

There was not enough ice on the Idaburn for a full bonspiel. The mini bonspiel planned for Sunday, where the Idaburn Curling Council clubs would contest the Brown Shield has been postponed, making way for the national event.
