Move to sort out Airport Rd confusion

Alexandra has one airport but two Airport Rds, and those factors add up to confusion, the Vincent Community Board was told this week.

One of the Airport Rds is a loop which links twice to State Highway 8 between Alexandra and Clyde, while the other Airport Rd branches off the loop at a T-intersection and ends at the airport.

Land Information New Zealand has asked for the name of one of the roads to be changed to clarify the address and clear up confusion.

Central Otago District Council roading engineer Mick Sparrow said the problem had increased as subdivision created more building sites that required numbering.

The issue was first raised in 2004 but at that time the council received ''a large amount of submissions and nobody could agree on a name change'', he told the board.

Linz wanted the name of the road which connected directly to the airport to be changed, he said.

The numbering of airport road properties did not follow a logical order which meant emergency services could have difficulty finding them.

Four residents on the road which linked to the airport would be directly affected by the road renaming and they supported a name change to Airport Link Rd.

Changing the loop road name would affect 38 residential properties and at least five businesses, Mr Sparrow said.

The board will recommend the name change to the council and the public will be invited to comment.
