Man charged over firearms incident further remanded

A 22-year-old Omakau man facing four charges following an incident near Omakau last month has been further remanded in custody.

Jake James White, farmer, of Omakau, first appeared in the Alexandra District Court before Judge Kevin Phillips on February 19, charged with possession of a firearm (a sawn-off shotgun) without lawful, proper and sufficient purpose; threatening to kill; Crimes Act assault; and injuring a person with intent to injure.

All the charges relate to an incident in a rural area west of Omakau township on February 18.

Police had surrounded Omakau after they were told of firearm use at 2.53pm that day.

A police statement later that evening said the incident had been resolved and nobody was injured. An ambulance was also called to the scene, but not needed.

White was remanded in custody without plea following his first court appearance, and yesterday appeared again in the Alexandra court before Judge Dominic Flatley.

He has still entered no plea, and was further remanded in custody, to reappear in the Dunedin District Court on March 19.
